Surrey Board of Trade receives over $230,000 to boost shopping in Surrey

THE Surrey Board of Trade has received $230,450 in funding to continue and build upon the Thank You Surrey – Shop Local campaign, which originally launched in early 2021. Funding is provided through the BC Chamber of Commerce through Canada’s Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.

“The Surrey Board of Trade is thrilled to have received this funding to build upon the success of our original Thank You Surrey campaign which will continue to inspire the community to shop local,” said Anita Huberman, President and CEO, Surrey Board of Trade. “Local businesses not only pay their employees, they also spend money at other local businesses. That means by buying local, you help create jobs for your friends and neighbors, contribute to improved public infrastructure, and invest in your community both socially and economically.”

She noted that local businesses have struggled throughout the pandemic and require support during this holiday season and beyond. Large online retailers have pushed out many smaller businesses unable to sell their goods or services online, unable to compete with prices, and those that have limited ability to market.

“Through this Thank You Surrey – Shop Local campaign, we will put a spotlight on those businesses that have been resilient throughout the pandemic. Surrey businesses deserve to be thanked for everything they did and continue to do throughout the pandemic to remain in business,” said Huberman.

A shopper survey will be created to provide insight on shopping habits and preferences. A social media and advertising campaign will run over the holidays and into next year featuring businesses in each town centre in Surrey. A Shop Local promotion tool kit will be distributed to businesses throughout Surrey, and will be available in many languages.

More information on the program will come in the next few weeks.
