SURREY residents celebrated National Forest Week and National Tree Day by planting over 500 trees and shrubs at Newton Pond Park supported by funding from a $24,500 TD Green Space Grant from TD Bank Group and the Arbor Day Foundation. 

The event marked the start of a month-long series of citywide community tree planting events as part of City of Surrey’s annual Releaf tree planting initiative. 

“Cultivating a healthy urban forest is vital to our vision of being a thriving, green and inclusive city,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “With the continued support of residents and community partners, we are strengthening our urban forest with a series of tree planting events. I would like to thank TD Bank Group and the Arbor Day Foundation for their support in helping us kick off this year’s tree planting season in Surrey.”  

Surrey’s Releaf tree planting program is delivered by Surrey Parks to support the health of Surrey’s urban forest and to promote the many benefits of trees including beautification, clean air, wildlife habitat, energy savings and opportunities to connect with nature. Releaf public plantings will take place every Saturday in parks throughout Surrey until October 30. Register to take part at surrey.ca/releaf.
