Surrey Council approves acquisition of 19 acres of parkland

SURREY City Council on Monday approved the transfer of four ecologically significant properties in the Fraser Heights neighbourhood from the Nature Conservancy of Canada for park and conservation purposes.

The properties — located at 17055, 17122, and 17174 – 106 Avenue and 17215 – 104 Avenue — are adjacent to existing forested parkland and will be added to the City’s natural area parkland inventory as they are protected under a Canada Lands Conservancy Covenant.

“These lands are more than green space – they are living infrastructure that supports biodiversity, climate resilience and community well-being,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “We will integrate nearly 19 acres of land into Surrey’s green infrastructure network that supports a healthy, diverse ecosystem in Surrey. By protecting this land, we are protecting our natural environment that provides the clean water, productive soil and beautiful outdoor spaces we all enjoy.”

There were no costs to the City associated with the transfer of land that had a combined estimated market value of $380,000. Annual operating costs to the City associated with these lands will be minimal as there is currently no public access and minimal road frontage.

The properties will be managed under the City’s Natural Areas Management Plan that aims to protect and enhance Surrey’s natural ecosystems.
