Surrey reports progress on Climate Change Action Strategy

THE City of Surrey has released its first annual report detailing progress on its Climate Change Action Strategy adopted by Surrey Council in 2023. The report includes the status of actions and highlights of projects advancing climate action to reduce Surrey’s contribution to global emissions and build a resilient future for Surrey.

“Today marks a significant milestone as we release our first annual report on the City of Surrey’s Climate Change Action Strategy,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke on Wednesday. “Over the past year, we have initiated 63% of our climate actions, which is a testament to our commitment to achieving our goal of becoming a zero-carbon climate-resilient city by 2050. I encourage all residents to stay informed through our new Climate Action Tracker and be a part of our ongoing efforts.”

Key highlights of our climate action projects include the creation of Surrey’s Climate Action Tracker platform to communicate updates on climate actions, the launch of a two-year electric bike share pilot program, a regenerative agriculture and habitat enhancement pilot project, the introduction of cooling requirements for new homes, and the design of a 15-megawatt sewer heat recovery facility, which will supply up to 70% of Surrey City Energy’s total heating demand with renewable energy.

The Climate Change Action Strategy, adopted by Surrey Council in 2023, outlines the steps the City is taking, in collaboration with other levels of government and partners, to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve resiliency to climate change impacts in the community. The vision is to transform Surrey into zero-carbon climate-resilient city by 2050. The plan revolves around six key components including bold city leadership, resilient 15-minute neighbourhoods, safe zero-carbon transportation, healthy zero-carbon buildings, climate-positive ecosystem and resilient energy and zero-waste systems.

Annual reports will continue to track the progress of these initiatives, along with regular updates via the Climate Action Tracker.
