Suspect arrested, charged for assault on Chinatown shopkeepers

A Vancouver Police investigation has led to charges against a man who allegedly committed a violent assault on two shopkeepers in Chinatown last week.

The victims – a married couple in their 70s – were working on the morning of September 14 in their store when the suspect entered and began causing a disturbance. When they asked the suspect to leave, the victims were assaulted, suffering various injuries.

The suspect fled, however, VPD officers obtained security images and began searching the area. On Saturday, September 16, officers patrolling the neighbourhood spotted the suspect near East Pender Street and Main Street. He was arrested and taken to jail.

Wayne Ronald Northey, 50, has been charged with one count of assault and one count of assault causing bodily harm. He remains in custody.
