Suspect arrested following appeal to public in North Vancouver sexual assault investigations

NORTH Vancouver RCMP announced on Wednesday that following two appeals for public assistance on October 2 and November 19 and the release of newly obtained video of a suspect in the sexual assault investigations that occurred in the Lower Lonsdale Area, an arrest was made on Tuesday.

On November 19 at approximately 7 p.m., the suspect depicted in the video included in the media release turned himself in to the North Vancouver RCMP. He’s currently being held in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.

“Police would like to thank the media and public for their assistance in sharing the video,” said Constable Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer for North Vancouver RCMP.

As this is an active and ongoing investigation, police are unable to share further information.

On October 2, police issued a public plea after reports of three sexual assaults that occurred in the Lower Lonsdale area. A fourth victim has since come forward after seeing the media release, reporting that she too was groped from behind by a man riding an e-bike on July 22. A witness was able to obtain cell phone video of the suspect fleeing the area.

Investigators released that video and a still image of the suspect in hopes that someone may recognize him.

Police are also investigating a fifth incident of groping that occurred on November 14 near West Keith Road and Chesterfield Avenue where a woman, who was walking, was groped by a man from behind. The suspect in this incident is described as approximately 6 feet tall, brown skin tone, hairy legs, wearing a black sweater with white logo on the front left corner and black shorts.

Although there appear to be similarities in each incident, investigators are not ruling out that there might be different suspects.

“Investigators are working extremely hard on all these cases, reviewing CCTV footage, conducting extensive neighborhood canvasses and following up on all leads to identify the suspect(s),” said Sahak on Tuesday.

“Our efforts have been negative so far and we are seeking public assistance to help further these investigations by identifying the suspect caught on video. Your assistance could be pivotal in bringing these investigations to a successful resolution and ensuring the safety of our community.”

Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to call North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 and quote file #2024-19636. Those who wish to provide information but want to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
