FOLLOWING a complex investigation by Metro Vancouver Transit Police, a suspect has been arrested in the vicious assault of a man in the bus loop at New Westminster SkyTrain Station.
On September 18 just after 8 p.m., a man left a business adjacent to the bus loop, and was waiting for the elevator at New Westminster Station. He was followed by another man, unknown to him, who was attempting to engage him in conversation. The victim turned to ask the man to stay away from him, when the man allegedly, without provocation, grabbed him and began to punch and kick him and knocked him to the ground.
A bystander called 9-1-1, but the suspect fled before police arrived on scene. The victim suffered significant trauma to his face and was transported to hospital via ambulance.
Transit Police identified and arrested the suspect, a 36-year-old man from New Westminster. He was released from police custody pending his upcoming court date. Charges of assault causing bodily harm will be forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration.
“Transit Police wants to send a clear message that we take violence on transit seriously. We investigate every incident fully and do our part to ensure that anyone who threatens the safety of the travelling public is held accountable for their actions,” said Constable Amanda Steed.
