PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his re-election.
Trudeau said in a statement: “The scale and scope of the democratic process in India is a significant achievement. Over a period of weeks, hundreds of millions of Indian citizens cast their votes, the most of any nation on Earth.”
He also pointed out: “Canada is home to one of the largest communities of Indian origin, with a diaspora of over 1.3 million people.”
Trudeau said: “As bilateral and Indo-Pacific partners, Canada stands ready to work together to advance the relationship between our peoples – anchored to human rights, diversity, and the rule of law.”
ON Wednesday, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) unanimously elected Modi as the bloc’s leader.
Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Leader N Chandrababu Naidu, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas (LJPRV) Leader Chirag Paswan and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Leader Praful Patel were among those who attended the meeting.
