Two youths arrested in shooting targeting South Surrey home of friend of slain Sikh leader Nijjar (update)

Police seized three firearms and multiple electronic devices

SURREY RCMP announced on Thursday that two youths have been arrested in the ongoing investigation of shots fired at the South Surrey residence of Simranjeet Singh, who was closely associated with slain Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was president of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara.

On February 1, at approximately 1:21 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a report of shots fired at a residence in the 2800-block of 154 Street.

A car was riddled with bullets as was the house.

According to well-known Punjabi journalist Gurpreet Singh Sahota, Simranjeet Singh “revealed that he has experienced instances of being followed in the past.”

Sahota also said: “The victim of the shooting told me that he had informed the police, prior to this attack, that he was being followed, that he regularly saw [suspicious] vehicles parked in front of his house, and that he thought someone was planning an attack on him. All of this information was captured on camera, but the police did nothing.”

Sahota said that a bullet missed the homeowner’s sleeping child by two feet.

A spokesperson for the B.C. Gurdwaras Council told the media that the shooting is “believed to be linked to [Simranjeet Singh’s] advocacy and community role for Khalistan (free Sikh homeland movement) and India’s ongoing targeting of Canadian Sikhs.”

On February 6, the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit executed a search warrant on a residence in the 7700-block of 140 Street. Police seized three firearms and multiple electronic devices during the search.

Two 16-year-old males from Surrey were arrested for careless use of a firearm and discharge a firearm with intent. The youths were released without charges at this time.

Investigators continue to gather information, obtain witness statements and collect evidence to advance the investigation and determine the motive of this shooting.

Surrey RCMP said that they take threats and acts of violence seriously and they work closely with victims to ensure their continued safety.
