UNIVERSITY RCMP on Tuesday announced the introduction of low-frequency emergency siren technology to its police vehicle fleet, enhancing safety for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency responders throughout the community.
Unlike traditional sirens, the new low-frequency warning system produces sound waves that can be both heard and felt. Operating in conjunction with conventional emergency sirens, the technology is particularly effective in environments where vehicle soundproofing, headphones, and other distractions may reduce a person’s ability to hear an approaching emergency vehicle.
The low-frequency tones create a noticeable vibration that helps alert nearby motorists and pedestrians, providing an additional warning during emergency responses. Developed to improve awareness at intersections and in dense urban environments, the system helps road users identify approaching emergency vehicles sooner and react more safely.
“The University Endowment Lands is a unique environment with a high volume of pedestrians, cyclists, students, and motorists sharing the roadway,” said Constable Vahid Abolhassani. “When officers are responding to emergencies, every second counts. This technology provides an additional layer of awareness for road users and helps ensure our emergency vehicles are recognized as quickly as possible.”

Residents may notice a new, deeper siren tone when police vehicles are responding to emergencies. The public is reminded to remain alert, safely yield the right of way to emergency vehicles displaying lights and sirens, and follow all directions from first responders.
