Vancouver ramps up inspections on high-risk, unlicensed events

VANCOUVER Fire Rescue Services (VFRS), the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), the City of Vancouver, and the provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB), are ramping up coordinated inspections of high-risk, unlicensed venues and events and urging the public to report unsafe events and not attend.

Enhanced enforcement efforts aim to protect public safety and uphold community standards following increased police service.

“Public safety is our top priority,” said Dave Meers, Deputy Chief of Vancouver Fire Rescue Services. “We want everyone to be able to enjoy Vancouver’s nightlife safely. Unlicensed events put people at risk and place added pressure on first responders. We’re taking coordinated action, on top of existing routine inspections, with our partners to ensure compliance and prevent harm.”

Inspections are focused on locations identified as high-risk for fire and life-safety hazards, including overcrowding, blocked exits and inadequate fire protection systems. Enforcement actions may include ticketing, prosecution, immediate closures and seizure of liquor products for establishments found in violation of City bylaws or provincial regulations.

Since June, 48 coordinated inspections have been completed with a total of 31 Municipal Ticket Information (MTI) issued for non-compliance for Fire Bylaw and City Licence Bylaw regulations.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to report suspected unlicensed events by contacting 3-1-1, and to call 9-1-1 if there is an immediate safety concern.
