VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC kept their place at the summit of the Western Conference after a comprehensive 3-0 win over Los Angeles Galaxy at BC Place on Wednesday night.

Whitecaps FC started the match motivated, immediately finding space in Galaxy’s half as Emmanuel Sabbi had a pair of early chances blocked.

The ‘Caps kept carving through the Galaxy in the opening stages, as both Brian White and Sabbi found space inside the box, but Galaxy ‘keeper JT Marcinkowski did well to save both ensuing efforts.

However, Marcinkowski could do nothing in the eighth minute as Thomas Müller flicked a ball towards White in the box, allowing the American to touch it past his defender with his head and smash home a volley to open the scoring.

The Galaxy were not going down without a fight, however, as Robert Taylor forced a big save from Yohei Takaoka at the back post after a dangerous counter-attack. Only a few minutes later, Takaoka had to come to the rescue twice more on Kyogo Furuhashi and Hirving Lozano.

Following a hectic period after the goal, Whitecaps FC were able to regain control for the remainder of the first half.

Cheikh Sabaly, who came on halfway through the first half, had a pair of great opportunities near the half-hour mark, finding space on the right hand side, but the Galaxy scrambled to deny a goal.

The ‘Caps kept putting the pressure on as the half came to a close, but had to go into the break with just the one goal advantage.

The second half saw Whitecaps FC continue their relentless attacking intent, with a flurry of chances inside the first five minutes. Ryan Gauld rose high in the air to direct a powerful header on target, but was stopped by Marcinkowski.

White had a chance to double both his goals and the lead in the 54th minute after bearing down on goal, but his attempt to poke it past Marcinkowski was blocked by the onrushing ‘keeper.

All that pressure finally came to a head three minutes later, after captain Gauld picked the ball up and charged his way into the box before calmly sliding home Whitecaps FC’s second.

The ‘Caps weren’t satisfied with two, and came close to making it a quick three afterwards, with both Sabaly and Oliver Larraz getting chances blocked.

Whitecaps FC finally got the chance to make it three in the 90th minute after Emiro Garcés handled the ball in the box. Bruno Caicedo stepped up and finished, despite Marcinkowski getting a hand to it, as the ‘Caps secured all three points.

Whitecaps FC are back in action this coming Sunday, September 13 as they host Austin FC, with the match presented by Tim Hortons.
