Winnipeg Police shot and killed person of interest in homicide of Delta truck driver

WINNIPEG Police say their investigators believe that a man they shot and killed in a hostage rescue operation on December 28 was a person of interest regarding another homicide being investigated at the same address.

On December 23, the Winnipeg Police Service received a missing person report regarding a long-distance truck driver from British Columbia, believed to be in Winnipeg.

Investigators from the Missing Persons Unit determined that he was in the city.

On December 26, his abandoned truck was located in the West Broadway neighbourhood. Upon further investigation, he was discovered deceased at an apartment in the 100-block of Furby Street.

Police said that the deceased victim has been identified as a 34-year-old male, Farah Mohamud of Delta, B.C., and family notifications have been made.

On December 28, at approximately 1:45 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to 25 Furby Street for an adult female being held hostage by an armed male in the apartment block.

He barricaded them inside a suite, and it was quickly established that two other adults and a child were also being held against their will inside.

Eventually the other adult — a female — and child were released from the suite, and a male escaped. These victims were all taken into the care of the Tactical Support Team unharmed. The initial female victim remained inside the suite with the armed male.

Communication and negotiations were established by the Tactical Support Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit. The victim’s life was in imminent danger as the armed male would not allow her to leave, police said.

At approximately 5:10 p.m., the Tactical Support Team implemented a rescue plan, intent on safely removing the female. During the rescue, member’s firearms were discharged, the male was struck and he succumbed to his injuries. The victim was not injured.

Investigators believe that deceased male was a person of interest regarding the homicide of the Delta truck driver.
