‘Caps edge Las Vegas Lights FC in hotly-contested preseason match

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – Vancouver Whitecaps FC edged United Soccer League expansion side Las Vegas Lights FC 3-2 on Saturday night in a hotly-contested preseason match at Cashman Field.

Cristian Techera opened the scoring for Vancouver 13 minutes in, cooling chipping Lights FC goalkeeper Angel Alvarez after some fine work on the right flank by Nicolas Mezquida and Kei Kamara.

Whitecaps FC doubled their lead on a quick counter-attack in the 18th minute, as Alphonso Davies went on a magnificent run that started in his own box and ended with a low shot from close range.

The match reached a boiling point in the 57th minute as Lights FC defender Marcelo Alatorre received a red card for a foul on Davies. A shoving match ensued on the pitch as well as on the sideline, as Whitecaps FC assistant coach Martyn Pert was sent to the stands along with Lights FC head coach José Luis Sanchéz Solá.

The altercation seemed to inject some life into the home team.

Juan Calderon scored the first two goals in Lights FC history with a 66th-minute free kick and 68th-minute penalty kick, drawing the score level. But Whitecaps FC regained their lead on a penalty of their own in the 74th minute, as Kamara scored the eventual winner with a neat finish into the bottom left hand corner.

The ‘Caps continue their preseason schedule on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. PT against MLS newcomers Los Angeles Football Club. Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson split his squad for this weekend’s fixtures, sending half the team directly to Los Angeles for Sunday’s match.

Whitecaps FC kick off the 2018 MLS regular season at BC Place on Sunday, March 4, at home to Montreal Impact. Single match tickets are on sale now. For more information on Whitecaps FC ticket options, visit whitecapsfc.com/tickets.

Vancouver drug connection alleged after arrest of singer Gurjant Singh in Punjab

The accused.
The accused.

PUNJAB Police said on Saturday that Punjabi singer Gurjant Singh, 24, aka Gurr-Vir Singh, and an accomplice, Surjit Singh, 35, were working with drug smugglers in Vancouver, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Dubai (UAE).

A cell phone seized from the two men had a contact list that included numbers from Vancouver and the other places. The two men allegedly told the police that they used WhatsApp calling to stay in touch with their drug suppliers.

The men were arrested by the Punjab police’s special task force (STF) on Saturday and 1.5 kg of heroin, a revolver with five bullets, and a cell phone with a number from Italy were reportedly seized from them at a police checkpoint.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG), STF, Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar, told the media that Gurjant Singh’s brother, Nirmal Singh, is also involved in drug smuggling from Pakistan.

“Surjit Singh said that he is a farmer, but he was into drug peddling for the past two years. He used to procure drugs from smugglers near the Pakistan border. Gurjant is into smuggling since the past six months. We have launched a manhunt to arrest Nirmal Singh too. We are investigating their past criminal record, if any,” police said, according to Indian media.

Police also noted that Gurjant Singh’s songs and videos glorified the gun culture.

Punjab Police did not say how they intend to pursue the Vancouver drug connection.

CONSUL General of Pakistan, Dr. Muhammad Tariq, hosted an event titled “Incredible Pakistan” at the University of British Columbia’s Robson Street Campus last week with over 200 people of diverse backgrounds attending the event.

At the entrance, there were tables with a raft of books and pamphlets such as “Discover Pakistan,” “World Heritage Sites of Pakistan,” “Enchanting Lakes of Pakistan,” “Pakistan Handcrafts,” “Thatta”, “Peshawar,” “Lahore” and more.

Dr. Tariq welcomed the guests and provided an excellent summary of Pakistan and issues the public would want to know about. He said Pakistanis are “fun loving people” and the negative images people have of Pakistan are coming “from the prism of a few individuals.” He said Pakistan is “safe.” He said there is no doubt that Pakistan had “testing times,” however, they were able to handle it. He said “the urban centre is brimming with life” with increased economic investment and there is improved security since the bombing in 2013.  They have seen a substantial increase in tourism and currently the government has eased visa requirements for 24 countries – including Canada – for 30-day visits, he said.

Peter Langar, a world renowned international travel photographer who has been to over 175 countries and is with SFU’s travel program, gave a presentation on Pakistan which he said was one of the top destinations he has visited. He started with a silent photography presentation with cultural music of Pakistan playing in the background. His images were truly stunning especially in how they captured the soul of the people of Pakistan. There were breathtaking images of mountains. His photos of the Pakistani cuisine, handcrafts, and historical sites were a treat for the eye. Many people in the audience were amazed to see art on wheels: “trucks are a rolling piece of art” in Pakistan, said Langar.

The slideshow was followed by a talk on Pakistan about the sites he had visited and the tours being offered currently for Canadians. He broke the negative stereotypes of the news media about Pakistan at the outset of the talk, saying “they have to sell their news” and what seems to sell is horror news.

Langar said Pakistan was a multicultural society with many languages. It had four major UNESCO sites. The audience learned about Thatta, the medieval capital of Sindh whose Makli Necropolis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the rare collection of relics from the Indus Valley Civilization and the Gandhara period. He spoke of the famous archaeological site of Mohenjo-daro. He spoke of Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur and Peshawar, among other places.

Many people in the audience were also interested in Lahore and its images of Badshahi Mosque and Shalimar Gardens had them spellbound.

Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib.

The Sikhs in the audience were captivated by what Langar described as the beautiful, majestic samadhi of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (the leader of the Sikh Empire, which ruled the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century) and stories of Guru Nanak Dev ji and Guru Arjan Dev.

From my four visits to Pakistan, I can attest that the Sikh gurdwaras there are sublime, and emit an aura of calm and

Gurdwara Dehra Sahib in Lahore.

a sense of being untouched by modernity, especially seeing the frescos depicting Sikh history, the trees and groves that Guru Nanak enjoyed in his last years at Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak in Nankanna Sahib, and the breathtaking, serene space at Gurdwara Panja Sahib. In the last five years, several Sikhs from the Lower Mainland have travelled to these Sikh historical sites. They told me that when they returned to Canada, they began preparing for their next trip back to Pakistan.

Man killed in targeted shooting in Coquitlam

THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in to Coquitlam for a Friday night shooting that left one man dead.

On February 16, just after 10 p.m., the Coquitlam RCMP received several calls of shots fired in the area of Sylvan Place and Riverview Crescent and a vehicle speeding away. When officers arrived, they found a man with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. The male victim was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Shortly after the reports of shots fired, the Coquitlam RCMP was notified of a burning dark colored sedan a short distance away in the area of Mariner Way near Dartmoor Drive. Investigators say they would like to speak with anyone that has information about it.

“It is still early in the investigation but this appears to be a targeted incident,” said IHIT Cpl. Frank Jang. “We need those who have information about this incident to please come forward.”

B.C. government seeks leave to appeal National Energy Board ruling

THE provincial government has applied for leave to appeal a December 7, 2017, ruling by the National Energy Board (NEB), allowing Kinder Morgan to bypass specific City of Burnaby bylaws related to construction work at the Burnaby Terminal and the Westridge Marine Terminal.

The Province’s position is that the NEB erred by too broadly defining federal jurisdiction over interprovincial pipelines. The Federal Court of Appeal will now consider the application.

British Columbia first appeared as an intervener in the October 2017 Federal Court of Appeal hearing over the NEB’s approval of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project.

Reports of money laundering through real estate ‘very serious and deeply disturbing,’ says AG

David Eby

ATTORNEY General David Eby on Friday called recent media reports of money laundering through real estate in British Columbia, including the Globe and Mail story on Friday,  “very serious and deeply troubling.”

He said: “The nature of these allegations, that this money-laundering activity is actively influencing our real estate market and is connected to the sale of life-destroying fentanyl, underlines the critical importance of addressing money laundering urgently and not ignoring it. This story confirms our government’s commitment to taking action to crack down on money laundering and criminal activity in B.C.

“Shortly after assuming responsibility for gambling policy in B.C., I hired Peter German to conduct an independent and thorough review of British Columbia’s anti-money-laundering policies and practices in relation to B.C. casinos. As part of his review, German is to explore what connection, if any, the issue has with other sectors of B.C.’s economy. This may include areas such as real estate or tax policy.

“Our government will work to determine the scope of this issue, and what must be done to appropriately address it. We will ensure our investigation into money laundering in B.C. casinos is informed by these disturbing revelations.”
