Sreesanth bought clothes worth Rs 2 lakh, gifted expensive phone to girlfriend: Police

Sreesanth

NEW DELHI: Sreesanth bought designer clothes worth Rs 1.95 lakh in Mumbai in a single day and gifted a costly smartphone to his girlfriend using the money he allegedly got from spot-fixing in IPL matches, Delhi Police claimed on Tuesday as it added criminal breach of trust charge against the pacer in the case.

It also formally arrested a former domestic player Babu Rao Yadav, who was picked up from Delhi on Monday and questioned for his links with arrested player Ajit Chandila, in the case. With this, 18 people have been arrested for their alleged roles in spot-fixing in IPL matches.

A day after seizing Rs 20 lakh from Chandila’s cricket kit from his aunt’s house in Haryana’s Palwal, police claimed it recovered the clothes bought by Sreesanth in Mumbai and the Blackberry Z10 model costing around Rs 42,000 he gifted to his girlfriend.

“He made cash payment for buying clothes,” a senior police official said.

Police also said they have collected voice samples of nine of the 18 accused, including that of Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Chandila. They are also in the process of taking handwriting samples of the three players.

Investigators added Section 409 (criminal breach of trust) to the case against 18 players and bookies arrested in the scandal after IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals filed a formal complaint with Delhi Police.

The official said investigators took Sreesanth to Jaipur last evening and brought him back earlier in the day to produce him in court as his remand ended on Tuesday.

“Sreesanth gifted the mobile phone to his girlfriend. We recovered it at the instance of the cricketer. We went to the house where the woman lived after Sreesanth talked about this during interrogation,” the official said.

Police claimed he bought the phone using the money he earned from spot-fixing.

“He also bought clothes, including denims, worth Rs 1.95 lakh from Diesel Store in Mumbai. He paid the full amount in cash. We have recovered these clothes. We have documents to prove that he used the money from spot-fixing to buy these articles,” the official said, adding that the store manager was quizzed.

Asked why Sreesanth’s voice sample was taken, police sources said he was using the phone of Jiju Janardhan, who was the conduit between the cricketer and bookies, and they had to match his voice.

Police sources said Sreesanth’s girlfriend has no role in spot-fixing and she was unaware about his dealings.

“Sreesanth was also not in touch with Chandila. We do not have any phone conversations between the two players talking about fixing matches,” the official said.

The official also said they were trying to find out from where all Sreesanth made the purchases.

Sources said Sreesanth was also taken to Marriott Hotel in Jaipur by Delhi Police.

Father gets eight years jail for repeatedly raping daughter

New Delhi–A Delhi court sentenced a man to jail for eight years for repeatedly raping his 17-year-old daughter and threatening her not to tell anyone.

Pronouncing the sentence, Additional Sessions Judge T.R. Naval said the one who was supposed to protect his daughter, had repeatedly committed the crime when her mother, who later died, was admitted in a hospital.

The court in the order said: “Keeping in view the submissions and all relevant factors and circumstances in which the accused committed crime, it would be just and appropriate if deterrent view in sentence is taken as the father, who is supposed to protect his daughter, has committed sexual assault on her repeatedly particularly when the mother of the victim was seriously ill and lying in a hospital.”

It added: “Accordingly, the convict is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for eight years for the offence under section 376 (rape) of the IPC.”

A fine of Rs.7,000 ($130) was also imposed on the convict, the court said, adding that if realised, Rs 5,000 ($90) be given to the girl as compensation.

“Besides this compensation, she will also be entitled to get other compensation, if available to her under other laws,” the judge said.

The incidents took place when the girl’s mother, who was suffering from tuberculosis, was admitted to hospital and the victim, after taking care of her mother, used to return home at night in June 2011, as per the prosecution.

The victim had told the court that on the night of June 17, 2011, her 38-year-old father raped her and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

According to the prosecution, the victim said that the accused, father of two other children, continued to rape her nightly for about a month. Following her mother’s death, the victim disclosed her ordeal to her aunt.

When the accused found out, he fled.

On Aug. 8, 2011, the aunt called the accused to her house on the pretext of meeting him and he was then arrested by Gokulpuri police, the police said.

The court rejected the plea of the accused that he was falsely implicated by his daughter at the instance of his sister-in-law as there was a delay in lodging a police report.–IANS

Sahara pulls out of IPL, not to renew BCCI sponsorship

NEW DELHI: Pune Warriors India, owned by Sahara India Pariwar, pulled out of the already scandal-hit Indian Premier League (IPL) and announced that they will not renew their sponsorship of the Indian cricket team after the present contract expires in December 2013.

The decision comes after the Lucknow-based firm’s demand to bring down the franchisee fee was not agreed upon by the Board of Control forCricket in India (BCCI). Sahara failed to pay the full franchisee fee of the Warriors for the current year which resulted in BCCI encashing the bank guarantee — and this further led to the Pune-based franchise pulling out.

“It is firm and final decision of Sahara to withdraw from IPL,” said a Sahara Statement.

This is the second time that Sahara have pulled the plug. The first time it happened was in 2012 owing to similar reasons but they bridged their differences with BCCI and returned to the fold.

Sahara bought the franchise for Rs.1,702 crore in 2011 for 10 years, making Pune Warriors the costliest team in the IPL.

Sahara have now said that they will not return to IPL “even if the entire fee was waived”.

The group also said it was tempted to withdraw from the Indian cricket team’s sponsorship but refrained in the interest of the players.

Pune Warriors India finished eighth in the sixth season of the IPL, winning four of the 16 matches played.

Hindu Immigration To The US Doubles; 70,000 Admitted In 2012

NEW YORK: The number of Hindus becoming permanent residents in the US has more than doubled over the last two decades.

While in 1992, the Hindus accounted for 3 percent of all immigrants to the US, the figure jumped to 7 percent in 2012, says a study by the non-partisan Pew Research Center in Washington.

In terms of numbers, about 30,000 Hindu immigrants were admitted into the US each year in the 1990s. But their numbers jumped to 70,000 in 2012.

According to the study, nearly 1 million Hindu migrants have been admitted into the US during the past 20 years.

As of 2010, there were about 1.8 million Hindus in the US.

The great majority of Hindu immigrants to the US come from India, Nepal and Bhutan. But the share coming from the Caribbean (West Indies) has decreased significantly, dropping from an estimated 16 percent of all Hindu immigrants to the US in 1992 to 5 percent in 2012, says the study.

The number of immigrants from Sikh, Jain and Jewish (mostly from the former Soviet Union) faiths as well as other folk or traditional religions from China, Hong Kong and sub-Saharan Africa is estimated to be 30,000 each year.

Over 68 percent of the one million new immigrants that the US admits each year are Christians. From 1992 to 2012, the US admitted 12.7 million Christian immigrants.

Muslim immigration to the US has also doubled from 5 percent in 1992 to 10 percent in 2012.

The number of Muslims immigrants has increased from 50,000 in 1992 to 100,000 in 2012. From 1992 to 2012, 1.7 million Muslims entered the US as immigrants.

Indian American Girl Esha Khare Invents Device That Charges Cellphone In 20 Seconds

NEW YORK: Google and other tech giants are wooing 18-year-old Indian-American whizkid Esha Khare who has revolutionized cellphone technology by creating a device that can charge a cellphone super fast in 20 seconds.

Called super-capacitor, the device can do up to 10,000 cycles, as against 1,000 that conventional battery chargers do.

Khare, who is from Saratoga in Santa Clara in California, has been conferred this year’s Young Scientist Award from the Intel Foundation for her invention. The award carries a cash of $50,000.
In an interview with NBC, she said she is ready to “set the world on fire” as she gets ready to study at Harvard.

Khare said she invented the device after she was frustrated by her cellphone battery dying quickly.

She said she started working on the energy-storage technology as a solution. Her specialization in nanochemistry, she said , helped her scale down the size of the device.

“It is also flexible, so it can be used in roll-up displays and clothing and fabric. It has a lot of different advantages over batteries in that sense,’’ the 19-year-old said. (News East West)

Indian-origin men in New Zealand face gang-rape charges

A woman has given evidence in a court in New Zealand implicating four men of Indian origin of raping her in turns in April 2011.

Amir Chand, 25, Harvinder Singh, 22, Kamaljeet Singh, 27, and Sumit Vermani, 26, are defending the charges in the high court in Hamilton, Fairfax NZ News reported Tuesday.

The woman has claimed that the four men raped her in the course of an evening during the Hamilton 400 weekend, the V8 supercar racing event that took place on the streets of that New Zealand city.

While Amir Chand, Harvinder and Sumit are from Hamilton, Kamaljeet is from Kaitkati town in New Zealand’s North Island.

Prosecutor Philip Crayton said the woman, who was aged 19 at the time of the incident, was drinking with a friend near the Waikato Stadium near Hamilton where the ZZ Top group was performing.

The two then went to a Pak N Save shop on Mill Street where they met a 16-year-old girl from the US.

The duo then asked the 16-year-old to accompany them to the city and the three started walking across the Pak N Save parking space.

It was then that a car driven by Chand with Vermani in the passenger seat pulled up beside the trio.

The men then asked the trio to get in the car.

Giving evidence via video link from another room in the court premises, the victim said that she had initially declined to get in but since their 16-year-old friend knew the men, they eventually got in.

However, she said she got worried when the car, instead of heading towards the city, started taking the road to Lake Rotoroa.

She said she and her friends were taken to a house on Lake Road where she alleged she was raped first by Chand and then by the other three men.

She also stated that she initially tried to resist but eventually gave up “hoping that it would be over sooner” and later suffered an asthma attack.

When the prosecutor asked her about the ethnicity of the perpetrators, she said, “Indian”.—IANS
