Parents seek answers in British Sikh schoolgirl’s death

LONDON: The parents of an eight-year-oldBritish Sikh schoolgirl have alleged that their daughter was killed by health workers in India in a failed attempt to harvest her organs.

Gurkiren Kaur Loyal was being treated for dehydration in a small clinic in Punjab when staff reportedly gave her a mystery injection.

“Within a split-second Gurkiren’s head flipped back, her eyes rolled in her head, and the colour completely drained from her. I knew they had killed her on the spot. I knew my innocent child had been murdered,” her mother Amrit Kaur Loyal told the ‘Birmingham Mail’.

According to Gurkiren’s family, the girl was then subjected to a “medieval” postmortem during which all her major organs were removed in a bid to hide the truth of how she had been killed.

It was only once her body was flown home to Britain that they discovered her organs weremissing and only her eyes remained.

Local police are believed to have taken their statements but the family is unsure if a proper investigation was carried out.

Their local councillor in Birmingham, Narinder Kooner, and Ladywood MP Shabana Mahmood, have now joined the family’s campaign to press the Indian and UK governments for answers.

“This was an absolutely horrific ordeal for the family to go through and we are trying to work with the foreign office and the Indian High Commission to try to get her organs returned,” Kooner said.

“It is imperative that we have the chance to independently establish the cause of death with the authorities in the UK,” added Mahmood.

The schoolgirl from Nishkam School on Soho Road in Handsworth was on her first foreign holiday visiting her grandmother, who later died.

Besides her mother, she was joined by her postal worker father Santokh Singh Loyal and 17-year-old brother Simran.

Gurkiren was taken to the clinic in Punjab after feeling sick and was placed on a drip after blood tests revealed she was free of infection.

Under pressure to help her after she received the injection, medics transferred her to a nearby hospital but she could not be saved and later died.

In Amritsar, SAD wins 50% seats unopposed

Amritsar: The SAD has kept its rural turf intact this time too by grabbing almost 50 per cent of the seats unopposed in the upcoming panchayat samiti and zila parishad elections. However, most of the villages lack basic amenities despite the rural population favouring the ruling party.

Besides, the zila parishad hardly has any power or contribution to the rural development agenda.

The ruling SAD had made a clean sweep in the previous zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections in 2008 in Majha region.

This time too, out of the total 21 rural constituencies in Amritsar, nine have already been taken by the SAD. Gurmeet Singh (Jasraur), Ranbir Singh (Lopoke), Sandeep Kaur (Chogawan), Harmeet Kaur (Harsha Chhina), Upkar Singh (Jahangir), Bhagwant Singh (Khasa), Jasbir Kaur (Majitha), Sukhwinder Singh (Tasrikka) and Gurwinder Kaur (Mehta) have been declared unopposed. The Congress did not field any candidate on Lopoke, Jasraur, Chogawan, Harsha Chhina and Jahangir seats.

Among the undisputed winners are the family members or relatives of SAD leaders. Ranbir Singh is the son of former MLA Vir Singh Lopoke whereas Gurwinder Kaur is the wife of SAD MLA Baljit Singh Jalalusma. Others in the fray include: MLA from Baba Bakala Manjit Singh’s brother Ranjit Singh. He is contesting from Baba Bakala.

The contesting candidates are promising safe drinking water, better sanitation services, health services, education, road infrastructure, grants for making houses and hygienic toilets.

Nexus 4 to launch in India this week

NEW DELHI: Nexus 4, the official Google phone, is available for pre-order on Flipkart, an e-commerce site, starting at a price of Rs 25,990. The device will be shipped to consumers as soon as LG, which makes Nexus 4 for Google, officially launches it in India. The launch is expected by Friday.

Sources said that the pre-order is part of an exclusive deal Flipkart has struck with LG.

Once the device is officially launched, it will also be available in retail stores across India. Sources say that details like price and availability have already been finalized and LG is waiting for a nod from Google before formally announcing the device.

While Flipkart has listed only 16GB version of Nexus 4, LG is also expected to launch the 8GB model. The price of 8GB model is expected to be around Rs 20,000.

Nexus 4 has a 4.7-inch screen with 720P resolution. The phone is powered by a quad-core processor and has 2GB RAM. It has a 8MP primary camera and a 1.3MP front camera. But the real appeal of the device lies in the software it runs. Like all Nexus devices, Nexus 4 is powered by an unmodified version of Android and is guaranteed to get updates whenever Google comes out with the new version of the OS.

Google usually sells Nexus devices online through its Play store. But Nexus 4 is likely to be sold only by LG and its retail partners. When contacted, Google Indiarefused to comment on the Nexus 4 launch details and availability.

The phone was launched in the global markets last year. At that time an LG executive claimed that it would be available in India in October. But the plans to launch it didn’t materialize.

Incidentally, Nexus 4 has appeared in India just hours before Google I/O, the company’s annual event for developers in San Francisco. Google is expected to announce a new version of Nexus 4 at the event. It is likely to have 32GB internal storage.

IPL: Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals to go on top

Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals

NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians reached on top of the points table beating Rajasthan Royals by 14 runs in their IPL clash at the Wankhede stadiumon Wednesday.

Chasing 167, Rajasthan Royals were restricted to just 152/7 as Mumbai bowlers put up animpressive show after batsmen did their job.

Though Stuart Binny and Brad Hodge tried hard in death overs, they fell short of the expectations.

Mitchell Johnson scalped Rajasthan Royals skipper Rahul Dravid in the first over at the score of 5.

Dravid tried to pull Johnson’s bouncer that went to keeper’s hand and umpire gave him out. Dravid’s reaction was stunning as he stayed there for a few seconds and vented his anger out of frustration before walking back.

Riding on a brilliant half-ton by Aditya Tare, Mumbai Indians scored 166/8.

Tare, who replaced an injured Sachin Tendulkar, paid back for the faith showed in him by the team management, with a 37-ball-59 that was studded with eight boundaries and a six.

The Rajasthan bowlers put up an impressive performance especially in the death overs as MI managed only 34 runs in the final five overs.

While James Faulkner (2/32) and Shane Watson (2/30) were the most successful bowlers, Kevon Cooper (1/27) and 42-year-old leggie Praveen Tambe (1/38) also did well in patches.

Yusuf Pathan first IPL batsman to get obstructing the field decision

Yusuf Pathan

RANCHI: India’s Yusuf Pathan on Wednesday became the first batsman in the Twenty20 history, and sixth overall, to be ruled out for obstructing the field.

Test cricket has seen only one batsman, Briton Len Hutton, getting out in that fashion while four players so far have been ruled out in the ODIs, latest being Pakistan’s Mohammed Hafeez against South Africa early this year.

Pakistan’s Rameez Raja (1987) and Inzamam-ul-Haq (2006) while India’s Mohinder Amarnath (1989) are the other three batsmen who were out in similar fashion in ODIs.

Pathan earned the dubious distinction of becoming first batsman to get out in that way in the shortest version of the game while playing for his IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders against Pune Warriors.

The match was in tight situation today when the incident happened. After managing to negotiate a yorker from Wayne Parnell, Pathan attempted a single. As Pathan ran, the bowler too tried to get close to the ball but Pathan pushed the ball with his foot, causing obstruction in the field.

The matter was referred to third umpire and he was declared out. His dismissal in the 18th over was turning point of the game as KKR did not have the batsmen to score required 23 runs from 13 balls after that.

Pune restricted Kolkata to 163 for seven to complete their third win from 15 matches.
