Yet another shooting reportedly connected to South Asian extortion in Surrey (Wednesday update)

SURREY Police Service has confirmed to The VOICE that it is investigating reports of a shooting in the area of 70 Avenue and 128 Street.

“Nobody was injured as a result of the shooting. As it is early in the investigation, the motive of the incident is still under investigation,” Sgt. Tige Pollock, Media Relations Officer, told this newspaper on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, SPS said that on Tuesday, June 10 at 9:30 a.m., it was called to a business located in 7000-block of 128 Street for a report of shots fired that had occurred sometime during the night. Upon police arrival it was quickly determined that the shots were fired during the night while the business was closed and there were no injuries reported.

Surrey Police Service’s Front Line Investigative Support Team (FLIST) has assumed conduct of the investigation. This investigation is continuing and connections to other incidents and potential motives are being explored.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 25-47567 (SP).

According to businessman Satish Kumar, the shooting is related to extortion attempts. He told The VOICE on Tuesday that he received a call on Monday evening from the same extortionist who had called him last week demanding money again. Kumar’s Reflections Banquet Hall was shot at last Saturday after he told the extortionist that he would not pay him the sum of $2 million he was demanding.

Kumar, who is the President of Surrey’s Laxmi Narayan Mandir, said that when he told the extortionist again that he would not give him any money, his old insurance office at 7045 128th Street in Surrey was shot at on Monday night. He said another businessman has been running his own insurance company from that office.
