For the 2019 model year, all Highlander models come off a 2017 refresh to keep it looking fresh and vibrant. There is bolder styling, improved safety features and more power. The Highlander range features the LE, LE Plus, SE, XLE, Limited, and Hybrid Limited models that become plusher and highly equipped as you move up the model line. We tested a loaded Hybrid version with the 300 horsepower, 3.5 liter V6 engine, the 8-speed auto transmission, and All-Wheel Drive with Active Torque Control, Hill-start Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control. Our fully loaded Limited edition tester came in a nice Celestial Silver metallic paint finish with a smart black leather interior. The Hybrid Limited adds as standard: 12-speaker, Synthesis Audio with Bluetooth®, JBL Audio System, AM/FM/CD/MP3/ WMA, Integrated SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Multifunctional Steering Wheel Controls, Audio Auxiliary Input Jack, USB Audio Input, 12, AVN Premium Navigation, SMS-to speech and Email-to-speech, Advanced Voice, Recognition, Phonebook and streaming audio via Bluetooth, 3-Zone Independent Automatic Climate Control and Seating for 7.
Overall it’s a pleasing mixture of lines and textures. The 19 inch black chrome wheels really set off the smooth, slink looks. The 2019 Highlander Hybrid as tested comes standard with two second-row captain’s chairs that can be adjusted forward or back for extra flexibility. The Highlander offers an interior cargo area of 385 Litres or 1,189 Litres with rear seat folded down. I particularly liked the texture and comfort of the premium leather seats and the sheer amount of front cabin room.
This smooth-riding vehicle is a great city CUV or sublime highway cruiser. The 3.5-litre V6 is coupled with Toyota’s proven hybrid drive system utilizing a high torque electric motor/generator, power is sent to all four wheels through an electronically controlled continuously variable Maneuvering around town is anything but a challenge thanks to the easy steering. The power delivery and hybrid system work seamlessly with smooth transitions. Fuel economy numbers are impressive (city 8.1 L/100 km; highway 8.5).
The Highlander is definitely not short on safety features. All 2019 Toyota models come exceptionally equipped with as standard safety features, such as Toyota Safety Sense, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Smart Stop Technology (SST). With its proven pedigree, fantastic build quality reliability and low running costs the 2019 Highlander makes for an excellent family Crossover Utility vehicle. Highly recommended.
