New Westminster man in crisis apprehended after nearly four hours

ON Wednesday, April 15 at approximately 7 p.m., New Westminster Police Department patrol officers were called to a suite inside a residence in the 600-block of Hamilton Street to confirm the well-being of the man inside. Officers learned that the previous attempts to communicate with the man found him to be agitated and it was believed he was in possession of a firearm.

Officers attempted to communicate with the man through the door to his suite. However, the man refused to comply with police instructions. An NWPD drone was utilized to provide police more information about what was inside the suite. Negotiations lasted for nearly four hours.

“At approximately 11:30 p.m. officers apprehended the man under the Mental Health Act and he was transported to hospital for treatment,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “A replica firearm was located inside the suite.”

This file remains under investigation.
