MAPLE Ridge RCMP on Tuesday confirmed that officers are investigating a report of mischief in Golden Ears Provincial Park.
On August 17, Maple Ridge RCMP frontline officers received a report from the public regarding graffiti made by an unknown male at Lower Falls trail in the park.
Officers are working with BC Parks staff to identify the persons involved.
Maple Ridge RCMP said they are aware of alleged photos and videos of the incident circulating online.
Maple Ridge RCMP said they acknowledge that while this incident appears to be an attempt at memorializing a drowning victim in the area, vandalism within a protected area is still considered a criminal offence. Such acts can harm the environment, diminish the experience of other park users, and create unnecessary cleanup cost for the community.
“We extend our sympathies to the family and the friends of the man who drowned and encourage those wishing to pay respects to do so through appropriate, legal means,” they added.
Police also encourage the public to obey all warning signs in the park and to stay safe and be prepared when using our outdoor recreational areas.
