RATTAN’S RUMBLE: Shame on businessman for such inappropriate behaviour!

WHAT was this Vancouver businessman thinking when he decided to so inappropriately hug Premier Christy Clark at Vancouver’s Vaisakhi Parade two weeks ago?

This photo is being circulated around the community and people have expressed their disgust at the obvious disrespect shown to the Premier who was graceful enough not to show annoyance.

Many South Asians told me how ASHAMED they feel about this incident – taking shameless advantage of the Premier. It makes all South Asians look pathetic.

Some tell me that they just can’t understand this craze about some South Asians wanting to be photographed with VIPs and then circulating the photos to try and show off.

I am told some send the photos back to Punjab to try and show how important they are!

In fact, some VIPs try to take advantage of this and even use South Asian and other “ethnic” journalists.

It is time that such South Asians start behaving in a dignified manner and stop embarrassing the whole community.

SOUTH Asians have been in Canada for more than 100 years and we are as Canadian as any other group, white or non-white. We have people in every profession and we are getting more and more powerful. But that power has to be used properly.

We are living in one of the best countries in the world, if not THE BEST. We should be proud of that.

Canada, as the New York Times reported this week, now has a richer middle class than that of the United States.

The newspaper noted: “Because the total bounty produced by the American economy has not been growing substantially faster here in recent decades than in Canada or Western Europe, most American workers are left receiving meagre raises.

It added: “Finally, governments in Canada and Western Europe take more aggressive steps to raise the take-home pay of low- and middle-income households by redistributing income.”
