AN armed and distraught male was peacefully apprehended following a coordinated response involving Coquitlam RCMP and multiple partner agencies.
On September 30 at approximately 11:50 a.m., Coquitlam RCMP received a report of a distraught male armed with a knife and also possibly a firearm in the area of Lions Park in Port Coquitlam.
Coquitlam RCMP frontline officers located the man on the supporting structure of the Kingsway Bridge. With assistance from Port Coquitlam By-Law Enforcement officers, RCMP officers quickly secured the area to ensure public safety.
Due to the elevated risk, members of the Lower Mainland District Integrated Emergency Response Team and the Crisis Negotiation Team were deployed to the scene. Officers engaged in prolonged negotiations with the male to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.
At approximately 4 p.m., the male was taken into custody without incident. He was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital for assessment and care. A knife was recovered from the scene.
“We want to thank all of the officers, first responders, and community partners who worked together to bring this situation to a safe and peaceful resolution,” said Coquitlam RCMP Operations Officer, Inspector Todd Balaban. “This incident is a strong reminder of how important teamwork, patience, and compassion are during a crisis.”
