THE BC RCMP said on Friday that it has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Richmond where one man suffered injuries.
On Thursday, August 22 shortly before 11 p.m., Richmond RCMP received a request of assistance from the Richmond Fire Department for a man allegedly setting a sign on fire in the 9800-block of Glenthorne Drive.
Officers arrived at the scene and located the man who was uncooperative. During the police interaction, a struggle ensued which resulted in a police officer getting stabbed and the man getting shot by police, the BC RCMP said.
The man and police officer were both transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services to be treated for what are believed to be serious injuries.
Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit will be investigating the initial call for police and the subsequent assault on the police officer. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Richmond RCMP.
The IIO BC said it was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident and if any force used by police was necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the circumstances.
The IIO is requesting any person with video footage or relevant information about the incident to contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
