Canada’s National Security and Intelligence Advisor meets India’s National Security Advisor (Monday update)

CANADA’S National Security and Intelligence Advisor, Nathalie G. Drouin, on Thursday met with Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor, in India.

In a statement issued by the Privy Council Office on Saturday, Drouin said: “We discussed our respective security concerns and committed to non-interference including refraining from transnational repression. We also agreed on the importance of reciprocal exchange of information and mutual responsiveness.”

He added: “This meeting followed constructive discussions held between Prime Minister [Mark] Carney and Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, during Canada’s G7 presidency year. With these talks, and the recent exchange of high commissioners between Canada and India to renew the diplomatic relationship, we are advancing a relationship based on mutual respect, the rule of law, and a commitment to the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

ON Monday, the World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) said that “in the past month, law enforcement issued duty-to-warn notices to multiple Sikh activists across Canada, reflecting imminent and serious threats to their lives.”

It said in a statement: “WSO has repeatedly highlighted that the Bishnoi Gang, which operates across borders with links to the Government of India, continues to present an ongoing threat to Canada and specifically members of the Sikh community. This gang has been tied to assassinations, extortion, and organized crime networks targeting members of the Sikh community in Canada.

“WSO calls on the Government of Canada to immediately list the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist organization, impose sanctions on Indian officials directing transnational repression, and reform the duty-to-warn system to provide real protection and support for targeted Sikh activists.”
