THE City of Surrey is set to welcome Canadian rock royalty, Blue Rodeo, to headline its annual Canada Day Celebration, presented by Coast Capital Savings, on July 1. This year’s celebration plans to be the largest Canada Day event in Western Canada with attendance expected to surpass 100,000 people.

(Editor’s Note: Blue Rodeo is one of my favourite groups.)

“On Canada Day we all come together to celebrate our country, heritage and diversity and I am proud that Surrey’s Canada Day Celebration is among the largest in the country,” said Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner. “Each year we host a truly outstanding event that brings the community together that shows our national pride and celebrates our unique qualities as Canadians. I look forward to seeing everyone there.”

Opening for Blue Rodeo will be alternative artists, The Zolas. Other Main Stage acts include newcomers Little India, and country music favourite, Me and Mae. Tragically Hip cover band, The Hip Show, and Zerbin will perform early evening, and this year’s fireworks musical mash-up will be crafted by BC DJ collectives, The Freshest.

The event marks Canada’s 148th birthday and highlights include: free live entertainment; a half a million square feet of site area; an expanded Kids Play area; family fun for all ages; over 100 exhibitors; amusements with midway games and rides; and a spectacular fireworks show for the grand finale.

“As always, Surrey’s Canada Day Celebration will have something for everyone: great entertainment, rides, community activities and family fun, and one of its best-ever fireworks displays,” said Councillor Bruce Hayne, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Sport Tourism Committee. “We’re incredibly thankful to the many generous sponsors, including presenting sponsor Coast Capital Savings, CTV, and Chevron, who together help make a community event of this magnitude possible.”

Country rock band, Blue Rodeo, is one of Canada’s most successful and well known musical acts, having released 13 full-length studio albums, three live recordings, and one greatest hits package.  Omni-present on radio across Canada for three decades, Blue Rodeo has sold in excess of four million records and won an unprecedented 11 JUNO Awards. They were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

Surrey’s 2015 Canada Day Celebration will take place Wednesday, July 1 at the Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre, 176 Street and 64th Avenue in Cloverdale. The event opens at 10 a.m. with the fireworks show slated to close the day at 10:15 p.m.
