Charges approved against suspect who stabbed two Vancouver Police officers

A 59-year-old Vancouver man has been criminally charged in relation to the forcible confinement incident in Strathcona on Tuesday and for stabbing two police officers who responded to the 9-1-1 call.

Jerald Jack Gates has been charged by the BC Prosecution Service with one count of unlawful confinement and two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer. He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Friday.

The incident took place inside a residential building near Keefer Street and Gore Avenue at around 10 a.m. on Monday, July 5. Officers were called to the suite, and when they entered, a physical struggle ensured. Two officers were stabbed and one officer injured his hand.

The injured officers have been released from hospital and are recovering at home.
