BURNABY RCMP announced on Tuesday that charges have been approved against the alleged driver involved in a hit-and-run that injured two police officers in 2019.
On March 4, 2019, Burnaby RCMP frontline officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run in south Burnaby that seriously injured two police officers from the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service.
The collision in the 5000-block of North Fraser Way and North Fraser Crescent involved a suspect vehicle and a police vehicle.
At the time, police said they believed that the police vehicle had pulled over at the side of the road when it was struck. Two police officers — one an RCMP member and one from the Abbotsford Police Department — standing outside the vehicle were injured as a result.
The suspect vehicle was located by police a short distance away. It was reported stolen to New Westminster Police Department the same day.
Burnaby RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team took conduct of the investigation.
On May 26, 2022, charges were laid against 32-year-old Jason Kirupakaran.
Kirupakaran faces the following charges:
- 2 counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm
- 2 counts of fail to stop after an accident causing bodily harm
- 1 count of public mischief
“This hit and run has had a significant impact on the two officers who were seriously injured while on the job,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj. “The investigation has spanned more than three years, with our Criminal Collision Investigation Team working tirelessly to conduct a thorough investigation that has now resulted in charges.”
