City of Surrey’s open burning regulations

SURREY Fire Service is reminding citizens and visitors that as of May 1, 2023, open burning, of any kind, has been banned in the city.

Seasonally high temperatures and dry weather conditions present an increased risk of brush fires and nuisance smoke throughout the City of Surrey. Fire Service responses to brush/grass fire incidents continue to trend higher than the five-year average. Last year between May 1, 2022, and Nov 1, 2022, SFS attended over 525 brush/grass fire incidents.

Open burning including backyard fires and beach fires are not allowed in the City of Surrey. Any fire service attendance to an open burning complaint will require extinguishment and may be subject to cost recovery.

Natural gas, propane or charcoal briquettes are permitted as long as they are being used in ULC/CSA-approved devices for that particular product. Charcoal briquettes are allowed on private property but may be prohibited (when the fire danger rating is at high or extreme) in city parks and on city beaches.
