Comrade Surjeet remembered in Surrey

The Indo Canadian Workers’ Association held a public meeting in memory of Comrade Harkishan Singh Surjeet at the Dogwood Hall in Surrey this past Sunday. The towering Marxist leader of India, Surjeet passed away on August 1, 2008.

On the occasion of his fifth death anniversary, the Association President, Surinder Sangha gave a call to all the left forces to work together to eradicate caste based discrimination and racism against Dalits and the indigenous peoples in India and Canada respectively. He said that Surjeet had dedicated his entire life for social justice and equality and keeping that in mind all the progressive forces need to stand up for the underdog.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Nazir Rizvi, Harjit Daudhria, Surinder Dhesi, Kulwant Dhesi, Hardev Singh, Preetam Gandhara and Dr. Raghbir Singh Sirjana. Paul Bilga and Devinder Takhar recited poems while the event was held under the leadership of Paramjit Gandhri and Balbir Singh, the grandson of Bhag Singh Canadian, a prominent Ghadar activist.
