Contract approvals for Surrey’s new Newton Community Centre and Bear Creek Park Athletics Centre

SURREY City Council has approved the awarding of contracts for the design and construction management of the new Newton Community Centre and Bear Creek Park Athletics Centre.

“The new Newton Community Centre and Bear Creek Athletics Centre are an integral part of the Surrey Invests program,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “Council’s approval of the design work and construction management contracts are an important step to building modern and sustainable public amenities for our residents. I am proud and excited at how fast the Surrey Invests program is moving to deliver much needed upgrades and new facilities that will benefit all who live, work or play in Surrey.”

The new Newton Community Centre will be a state-of-the art facility for all ages. The facility will be built to meet the City’s Sustainability Charter and accessibility initiatives. Construction will begin next year and is scheduled to be completed in 2024.

The Bear Creek Athletics Centre will include a permanent covered grandstand with seating for 2,200 people, new changerooms, public washrooms, concession and timer’s booth, a new track built to international standards, and a replacement artificial turf field and walking/running track. Construction will begin early next year, with completion by the end of 2022.

“Council is committed to improving and expanding the recreational opportunities for our citizens,” said Councillor Laurie Guerra, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee. “As part of the new Surrey Invests program, these projects represent two of the 16 projects Council has committed to get underway before the end of this year.”
