DEEPAK Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and for International Human Rights, was recently presented with the Global Visionary Award by the Vision World organization of Ahmedabad, India.
The award was presented to Obhrai on January 10 at a ceremony held in Ahmedabad on the sidelines of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Vibrant Gujarat Summit hosted by the Government of India. The Global Visionary Award is in recognition of Deepak Obhrai’s “exemplary contribution to Canada’s public life, parliament, and strengthening of Indo-Canadian bilateral relations.” A distinguished past recipient of the Global Visionary Award is India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In 2009, Obhrai was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award, the highest honour given to overseas Indians, by the President of India. In 2014, the Indo-American Friends Group of Washington D.C. presented him with the Pride of India Award for his work on increasing Indian diaspora participation in pluralistic political activity.
Shri Deepak Obhrai, a Canadian politician has been a de facto Ambassador of India in Canada dedicated to Indo-Canadian friendship and cooperation.
Shree Deepak Obhrai with his family roots in India was born in Oldeani, Tanzania. 64 years old Deepak Obhrai is a leading politician devoted to the service of Canada where he has settled down since 1977. Shree Deepak Obhrai’s varied social services led him to active politics and he was first elected to the Parliament of Canada as a Candidate of Reform Party in 1997. He has been continuously elected to the Parliament in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2011. In 2000 he represented Canadian Alliance and in the last three terms he has been elected as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada.
Shree Deepak Obhrai has served with distinction as Parliamentary Secretary since 2006, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of International Cooperation and also for International Human Rights. In recognition of his years of outstanding public services, Shree Deepak Obhrai was appointed to Her Majesty’s Privy Council for Canada in 2013 on the advice of the Prime Minister of Canada.
Shri Deepak Obhrai has been a recipient of several prestigious awards for his service as a Parliamentarian. He was honored by the government of India in 2009, when he was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award by the President of India for his contribution in strengthening bilateral political, social and cultural relations with India and motivating Indian diaspora in pluralistic political activities in Canada. Recently in Washington D.C. and New Delhi he was awarded the Pride of India Award by the Indo-American Friends Group.
