Delta Mayor Harvie asks Pickleball Canada and Pickleball BC to take steps to mitigate growing noise concern

DELTA Mayor George V. Harvie has written to Karen Rust, President, Pickleball Canada, and Walter Knecht, President, Pickleball BC, expressing support for the continued growth of the sport of pickleball and encouraging these organizations to pursue equipment updates and other best practices to mitigate the growing noise concern associated with pickleball courts.

The February 11 letter states:

“The City of Delta has made significant investments in pickleball infrastructure in recent years. Since 2019, the City has added 36 new pickleball courts for a total of 59 throughout the community. We are proud of our $2.6 million investment over the past three years in this fast-growing sport and appreciate your leadership and advocacy for its continued growth.

“While the local pickleball community has appreciated our efforts to support the growth of the sport througjh new courts, we have also been hearing concerns from neighbours about the noise produced by the game. As we seek to balance the interests of everyone in the community, we need to be cautious about new investment in pickleball facilities until the noise issues can be addressed. To help support continued pickleball growth, we encourage your organizations to pursue equipment updates and other best practices that mitigate the growing noise concerns.

“We appreciate your efforts to continue growing participation in the fun and accessible sport of pickleball and would like to continue supporting its growth if the noise concerns can be adequately addressed. If you would like to discuss the issue, please contact me directly by phone … or email: …”
