“In the Archive of Memory”: Approaching Air India Flight 182 bombing with research, creation, conversation.

Vancouver, Sunday November 26, 2 p.m., 149 West Hastings Street, Vancouver, SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts

Free public event featuring Renee Sarojini Saklikar, author of the award winning Children of Air India in conversation with Angus Reid President Shachi Kurl and  Dr. Angela Failler, Canada Research Chair in Culture and Public Memory. Books will be available for signing.

The event will mark the 10-year anniversary of the publication of Saklikar’s Children of Air India about the history of the bombings and her grief. Saklikar was 23 when she lost her aunt and uncle in the 1985 bombings when Air India Flight 182 exploded over the Atlantic, near the southern coast of Ireland. All on board, including 82 children under the age of 13 were killed.

Saklikar and Failler have been in dialogue for more than a decade about their ongoing writing and research on the 1985 Air India bombings. Kurl led a recent Angus Reid poll pointing to a lack of awareness among Canadians of this catastrophic event. The three come together to celebrate the anniversary of Saklikar’s original book of poetry, and to reflect on the importance of creative approaches to histories of violence – past and present – as a means of fostering critical understanding and hope.
