MONDAY 4 P.M. UPDATE:
Begg (NDP) now leading by 18 votes in Surrey Guildford. Begg 8,922; Randhawa (BC Con) 8,904
NDP incumbent Garry Begg may yet make it to Victoria; that is, if he manages to overcome the 12-vote lead his opponent, BC Conservative candidate Honveer Singh Randhawa, commands at present.
On Sunday evening, Begg had garnered 8,809 votes as compared to Randhawa’s 8,821 votes. An estimated 226 absentee and special votes remain to be counted.
According to the preliminary results that Elections BC had declared till midnight on Saturday, October 19, Randhawa had won 8,671 votes as compared to Begg’s 8,569 votes — a difference of 102 votes. That difference is down by 90 votes.
If the difference between the two candidates after the final count is less than 1/500th of all ballots, a judicial recount will have to take place.
If the NDP wins this seat and if they hold on to Juan de Fuca-Malahat and Surrey City Centre, the NDP would end up forming the government with 47 seats.
With just 46 seats, the NDP will have to rely on the BC Green Party’s support to form the government. The BC Greens have two seats. The BC Conservatives have 45 seats.
