THE Crown Prince of Bhangra — world renowned Canadian Punjabi artist Jazzy B — performed on Saturday at the Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s third annual Vaisakhi Celebration Match at BC Place joined by drummers and dancers from the Shan E Punjab Arts Club.
Before hitting the stage at BC Place, Jazzy B joined by DJ Heer performed on Terry Fox Plaza for a pre-game performance presented by RED FM, connecting with fans across generations.
The South Asian community was proud to showcase its culture to diverse communities, with various community groups, including Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen volunteers in attendance.
Jazzy B spoke directly to youth about dreaming, and reaching out for help to deal with mental health issues. He advised parents not to pressure their kids and allow them to dream.
He related the story behind his new album called “Ustad Ji King Forever.” He said: “The reason for the album, if you see the cover, it’s my story, and I tell this on every stage. When I was four years old, I saw a clip of Ustad Ji performing for the first time.”
And that is when he started to dream. He added: “And here I am 30 years later! Dreams do come true that is why it is very important to tell the story to you guys because nobody thought I could not make it. I did not think I would make it, but I made it because I dreamt. So make sure that whatever you want to do in life, dream! Alright? It’s not going to happen overnight, but it will help if you keep working towards your dreams.”
Turning to the parents, he said: “Just a humble request to parents … I know some of you are going to get mad at me, but we put too much pressure on our kids. Listen to them. Don’t put pressure on your kids. Everybody is different.”
Then he addressed the kids: “And kids, do listen to your parents because they will guide you the right way. They do know what they are talking about because the journey or dreamland you want to go on, they have already been through it. So a humble request to the kids as well: listen to your parents.”
