Man arrested after brandishing a knife in New Westminster

AT approximately noon on Tuesday, July 25, New Westminster Police were called to Columbia Square Plaza after a man reported a suspect brandishing a knife and threatening to kill him.

Officers rushed to the area and quickly located someone matching the suspect description. The suspect was arrested without incident and transported to New Westminster Police Department cells.

Police said that at this time, the following charges will be forwarded to Crown Counsel: one count of assault with a weapon, one count of uttering threats, and two counts of breach of probation.

“This suspect has multiple court ordered conditions, and because of the diligence of the public in reporting his behavior to police, our officers were able to identify him and recommend the appropriate charges,” said Media Relations Officer Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “We strive to ensure that our city is safe for everyone to enjoy, and we want to thank the public for their assistance in working towards that goal.”
