Man arrested and charged in murder of Kelowna security guard Harmandeep Kaur

A Kelowna man has been arrested and charged for the February 26 murder of security guard Harmandeep Kaur, 24, at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO).

On February 26, 2022, the Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of an assault that had occurred in one of the buildings on the UBCO campus. A man working at the university had allegedly assaulted a security guard. The security guard, Harmandeep Kaur, later died.

Following an investigation spearheaded by the Kelowna RCMP Serious Crimes Unit, on Tuesday (April 5), the BC Prosecution Service approved one count of second-degree murder against 22–year-old Dante Ognibene-Hebbourn of Kelowna. He has been arrested and is expected to appear next in court on April 6.

“This has been a difficult few weeks for the community in the aftermath of the tragic events of February 26.  The response in support to the woman’s family has been remarkable. I would like to thank the Kelowna Serious Crimes Unit and the first responders for their work to bring this case before the court,” said Inspector Beth McAndie, Investigative Service Officer for the Kelowna RCMP.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends, and co-workers at this time. We will continue to provide any support they may need, as we prepare for the upcoming court process,” Kelowna RCMP said.

Police said that given this matter is now before the court, no further information will be released by them.
