MIKE Hurley, Chair, Metro Vancouver Board of Directors, on Friday said in a statement on compensation for elected officials: “On May 23, 2025 the Metro Vancouver Board moved forward with creating a Governance Committee to implement recommendations put forward by Deloitte Canada as part of its independent Board Governance Review.
“The Governance Review report makes 10 recommendations for Metro Vancouver on remuneration for its Board. The Board accepted and acted on recommendations related to remuneration immediately, including eliminating double meeting fees. The review by Deloitte Canada determined that Board and Committee compensation for attending meetings is appropriate.
“There have been claims that this committee is tasked with reviewing total pay and benefits of elected officials, including looking at an overall salary cap. Metro Vancouver can only review compensation for its own Board/Committee members, not of elected officials generally, who can be compensated for participation on various Boards and by their municipalities. Metro Vancouver has no jurisdiction over remuneration at TransLink, South Coast Transportation Authority, Municipal Finance Authority or municipal councils.
“In the report, Deloitte recommends that the Province consider introducing a cap or maximum remuneration threshold. These are not recommendations for Metro Vancouver, and it is not the jurisdiction of Metro Vancouver to take this action.”
