NORTH Vancouver RCMP has seized a large machete during a disruptive weekend in Lynn Valley following grad parties as the school year comes to an end.

On Saturday, June 20, police received several reports of disorderly behaviour in Lynn Valley. Officers responded to reports of large groups of youth openly consuming alcohol at parks and school grounds, setting off fireworks, engaging in fights, throwing beer cans, and setting fires.

In one instance, a complainant reported a group of 40 youth causing a disturbance. During the interaction, the complainant was assaulted by a youth from the large crowd. Officers immediately responded and located the youth suspect. When officers attempted to arrest the suspect, he fled. Prior to fleeing, officers had located a large machete on the suspect during the arrest attempt, which was subsequently seized by police. The identity of the suspect is still unknown, and the investigation is ongoing. The complainant was not seriously injured.

While students should expect to be held responsible for their actions during these events, Cpl. Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer for North Vancouver RCMP, notes that parental influence remains crucial. He notes: “Guardians play an essential role in guiding their children and helping them make informed decisions. We urge parents to have open and honest conversations with their teens about how to make good choices, and the possible outcomes and consequences of poor decisions.”

When discussing topics like substance use, be direct and factual, without overwhelming your child with too much information.

By having thoughtful conversations and setting clear expectations and boundaries, guardians can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for their teens.

Throughout the summer, North Vancouver RCMP say their officers will be taking a proactive approach to the enforcement of liquor, traffic violations and local bylaw violations.
