IT is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Sardarni Gurdev Kaur Bal, who passed away on March 1, 2022, at the age of 92 at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
She was the daughter of late S. Munsha Singh Basra and the late Sdn. Niranjan Kaur Basra. She was born in Phagwara, Mohala Aratiya District Kapurthala. She received her early education in Phagwara and in 1952 completed her Giani and in 1953 completed her J.B.T.
In 1946, she married her husband the late S. Sarbjit Singh Bal (from Sathiala), and had 4 children, 1 daughter – Avinash Kaur Chahal – and 3 sons – the late S. Bhupinder Singh Bal, S. Harinderpal Singh Bal, and S. Nirlaip (Paul) Singh Bal.
She worked as a teacher for over 20 years, impacting the lives of every student and family she met. On March 1, 1979, she took an early retirement to move to Canada with her family to create a better life. In 1979 she moved to Surrey, BC, and worked towards providing a bright future for the generations to come.
She was passionate about education and music. She enjoyed playing the dholki and singing folksongs. She was an active member of the Surrey-Delta Indo-Canadian Seniors Society.
She is survived by her sons, daughter, 12 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was truly the greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. Her presence, her love, warm energy and charismatic smile will be greatly missed.
Her funeral will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Valley View Funeral Home, 14644 72nd Avenue, Surrey.
Bhog will be at 12 p.m. at Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara located at 8115 132nd Street, Surrey.
