JALANDHAR: One person was killed in a road accident while 20 others sustained injuries in two separate group clashed today in Jalandhar.
A speedy sift car crushed a cyclist on Jalandhar-Amritsar national highway near Hamira village this morning. The deceased identified as Balbir Singh, resident of Kartarpur was going to Hamira and as soon he tried to cross the road, a speedy swift car hit the cycle. The car driver rushed him to a nearby private hospital. The doctors declared brought him dead.
In another incident 13 persons said to be supporters of Nirmal Singh and Varinder Kumar operating taxi stands at Jalandhar cantonment sustained injuries as both the groups clashed with each other over the taxi fare. According to cantonment police, a person came to Nirmal Singh for hiring a taxi for Nangal. Nirmal Singh told him that a sum of Rs. 2200 would be charged for the journey.
Varinder Kumar also operating taxi stand nearby lured the customer with a low fare of Rs. 1700 only. Nirmal Singh lowered the hire further to Rs. 100 as demanded by Varinder Kumar. Irked over the lower offer, Varinder started abusing Varinder which led to scuffling. Soon after both the taxi stand operators summoned their supporters who rushed to the site with sharp edged weapons and attacked each other resulting into injuries to 13 persons. All the injured rushed to the civil hospital where again supporters of both the groups clashed following which the security guards at the civil hospital pushed them out of the emergency ward.
Five persons including three women sustained injuries in another group clash in New Suraaj Ganj locality here over the parking of rickshaw. Dispute rose over the issue of dumping debris. Nisha wife of Rakesh Kumar told the police that they had parked their rickshaw in front of their house. A neighbor Monti was in the process of renovating his house. He asked for removing the rickshaw.
Since there was no male member in the house at that time, she asked him to wait for some time but he started abusing them which led to clash injuring five persons from both the sides including three women.
A student of 6th standard Shivam received burn injuries after he was trapped in the high voltage transmission wires in Tower Enclave Phase III this morning. His mother Kusam Lata said that he had gone to the roof to collect clothes. Soon after she heard the screams of the boy and when they rushed to the roof, they found Shivam lying unconscious on the roof. He had been admitted in the civil hospital.
