Over 2,000 employees laid off temporarily by City of Surrey

THE City of Surrey said on Thursday that since March 16, its recreation centres, libraries, civic ice arenas, cultural facilities, museums, and public pools have been closed due to health and safety orders for the COVID-19 pandemic. The closure of these facilities have resulted in temporary workforce reductions for part time / auxiliary staff in Parks, Recreation and Culture and part time / auxiliary and regular staff at Surrey Libraries.

The City is providing 28 days of pay continuity for part time and auxiliary staff and 42 days of pay continuity for regular staff that have been temporarily laid off. There have been temporary layoffs of 140 regular staff and approximately 1,900 part time / auxiliary staff. The staff reductions are exclusively due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are temporary, the City added.
