Perry Bellegarde elected to second term as national chief of Assembly of First Nations

NATIONAL chief of the Assembly of First Nations Perry Bellegarde was elected to a second term on the second ballot on Wednesday in Vancouver. Bellegarde bagged 63 per cent of the 522 votes from chiefs and their proxies. He had failed to secure the required 60 per cent of the vote in the first round of voting.

Perry Bellegarde — 328

Sheila North (Manitoba) — 125
Miles Richardson (a former Haida Nation president from B.C. — 59
Russ Diabo (Mohawk analyst) — 10

Katherine Whitecloud, a former Manitoba regional chief of the AFN, was eliminated on the first ballot.
