DECEMBER 18 UPDATE:

Edmonton Police identified the victims as Ranveer Gill, 20, and Gurdeep Singh, 26, after the completion of autopsies by the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday and Wednesday. The autopsies determined that both men died of multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death is homicide.

DECEMBER 21 UPDATE:

According to The Tribune newspaper of India, “Ranveer, the only child of his parents, had been living in Brampton on a study visa and was planning to move to the United States. He had gone to Calgary before visiting Edmonton at a friend’s invitation.” The newspaper said: “Gurdeep, married five years ago, had moved to Canada nearly two years back and was scheduled to visit India next month.”

THE Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says it is investigating the suspicious deaths of two adult men that took place in southeast Edmonton.

On Friday, December 12, at approximately 1:43 a.m., officers responded to reports of gunshots in the area of 32 Street and 26 Avenue. Officers located two males believed to be in their 20s suffering from gunshot wounds. EPS officers attempted lifesaving measures until EMS arrived and assumed care. Sadly, both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe this to be a targeted event. The investigation is ongoing.

Journalist Gagandeep Singh in a post on X identified the victims as Gurdeep Singh of Barah, Punjab, and Ranveer Singh of Uddat Saidewala, Punjab, who had come to Canada as students.

The Tribune newspaper of India reported: “According to the family, the two were shot moments after entering a car after leaving a friend’s birthday party. Ranvir was seated in the driver’s seat, with Gurdeep beside him, while a few others were sitting in the back.

“Ranvir’s uncle, Mandeep Singh, said the assailants arrived in another vehicle, opened fire, and fled the scene immediately. Ranvir was struck by a bullet, while Gurdeep appeared to have been hit by shrapnel.

“The family suspects the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity, as the car the victims were in did not belong to them.”

The EPS Homicide Section has taken over the investigation. Autopsies are scheduled for Tuesday, December 16 and Wednesday, December 17.

Police are looking for a dark-coloured SUV that may have been in the area at the time of the shooting. Investigators are asking anyone in the area of Silverberry Road and 23 Avenue, as well as 34 Street and 29 Street, who may have dash camera or security footage from approximately 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 11 to 2:30 a.m. on December 12  to contact police immediately.

Anyone who may have witnessed the shootings or observed suspicious activity in the neighbourhood is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
