RICHMOND RCMP are cautioning the public to leave a dog named Hugo and his owner alone.

Since June 19, police have responded to multiple calls at a residence since posters were put up around the city alleging Hugo was being abused. Theses allegations have been thoroughly investigated and determined to be unfounded, police said.

Despite confirmation of Hugo’s well-being from Richmond RCMP, the City of Richmond and the BC SPCA, people are continuing to attend the owner’s residence to “check” on Hugo.

Richmond RCMP are actively investigating a mischief to the residence. As a result of the constant harassment of the resident, Richmond RCMP placed officers outside of the residence to preserve public safety and inform the public that the dog abuse allegations are unfounded.

“Our officers observed a steady stream of people coming by, some of whom were aggressive and confrontational with police,” said Cpl. Adriana O’Malley, Media Relations Officers, on Thursday. “We need the public to understand that Hugo is fine and not encountering any abuse.”

Richmond RCMP will continue to maintain a high presence at this residence and will fully investigate any public disobedience or criminal behaviour.

Police said that the City of Richmond and BC SPCA conducted a timely and thorough investigation of the allegations and determined the complaint to be unfounded.  It appears that someone made a concerted effort to publicize allegations of animal cruelty by posting signage on City property.

Richmond RCMP noted that the City and BC SPCA take complaints of animal cruelty extremely seriously. Should anyone have concerns or complaints about lost, wandering or aggressive animals, barking, and nuisance or neglected animals, they should call the BCSPCA at 604-709-4668.
