JUST four days after a South Asian businessman’s residence in the 17000-block of 32 Avenue in Surrey was targeted in an extortion-related shooting, it was shot at for the second time at approximately 7:35 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12.
RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) officers responded to calls of possible shots fired at the residence. Police said that no injuries occurred as a result of the incident.
“RCMP SPOSU General Investigation Unit (GIU) has taken conduct of the investigation. The investigation is in its early stages and investigators will be continuing to gather evidence related to the shots fired, including liaising with police partners to determine if there are any links to other files,” police said.
In last Saturday’s incident, there was damage to the property, and well-known journalist Gurpreet Singh Sahota reported: “One Punjabi man was injured in the incident — a bullet struck him near his nose and cheek, a detail that has not been released. Fortunately, he survived what could have been a fatal attack.”
Surrey Police Service later confirmed the injury to the media. A spokesperson said that Surrey has had 94 extortion incidents that included 43 related to shots fired. He also clarified that some of the incidents were the result of the same complainant victim filing reports on several occasions.
It seems that the perpetrator was openly mocking South Asian businessmen, the police and the politicians who had attended a memorial for slain Abbotsford businessman Darshan Singh Sahsi last Saturday at a Surrey banquet hall where members of the South Asian community urged the authorities to produce results. Sahnsi’s family members insist that he had received no extortion demand.
CBC News has announced that it will host a town hall on extortion crime on Thursday, November 13, but skeptical community members are wondering what exactly that will accomplish when so much has already been said on the issue. Talk is cheap — what is needed is more results: more arrests.
