SURREY Mayor Doug McCallum on Wednesday said in a statement: “I want to reassure the citizens of Surrey that all is not bleak and that I believe that each of us can stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The virus began in a single person in China and has multiplied because it is able to latch on to new carriers. The unprecedented measures that have been put in place has been done with the express purpose to stem and stop the spread of the virus.
“We all understand how high the stakes are and that’s why it is imperative that we have the self-discipline to follow this fight through. The orders and measures, such as practicing social distancing and not gathering in large groups, are only effective if we collectively put them into practice.
“As we have seen, there is a real human and economic toll to pay if we do not step up to stop the virus, but we can fight the spread by taking the precautions that have been laid out. This battle is for the health of our communities, our neighborhoods, our older population that is the most vulnerable, our loved ones, our families and our individual self.
“We all possess the power to fight COVID-19 by making sure we are not an easy target for the virus to latch on to. By taking responsibility of our actions and by taking care of ourselves, we are taking care of one another and our community as a whole.
“COVID-19 can and will be stopped, and the fight begins and ends with each of us.”
