Suspect arrested after 14 car windows smashed in New Westminster

THE New Westminster Police Department is investigating a series of incidents in which 14 car windows and a business’s window were smashed in the West End overnight.

Officers were first dispatched to the 1500-block of Dublin Street at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday after a report of a car alarm. The vehicle’s owner discovered the window had been smashed, and soon after, witnesses reported seeing someone riding a bicycle down the street damaging vehicles. Officers flooded the area but were unable to locate the suspect at that time.

Approximately two hours later, officers were called to a business on 12th Street after the owner reported seeing a man on a bicycle kick the glass out of the front window. Soon after, officers located and arrested a suspect near Edinburgh Street and Henley Street.

“This kind of behaviour is purely destructive and completely senseless,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver on Thursday. “We understand how upsetting it is for people to find their property damaged. We’re asking anyone whose vehicle or property was vandalized to reach out so we can piece together the full extent of what happened.”

At this time, at least 14 vehicles and two businesses are believed to have been damaged. If your vehicle or property was damaged overnight on November 11 in the West End, you are requested to report it to the New Westminster Police Department by calling 604-525-5411.
