BURNABY RCMP announced on Tuesday that they have arrested a suspect in relation to the April 20 assault of an 89-year-old woman at Metrotown.

Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of an assault in progress at Metrotown on April 20. An 89-year-old woman had been shoved to the ground by an unknown man. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and discharged later that day. Burnaby RCMP’s Investigative Support Team (IST) assumed conduct of the file.

Through tips from the public, Police were able to obtain higher quality images of the suspect from a day prior to the assaults.

After receiving another tip from the public, on April 24 at approximately 3:30 p.m., Burnaby RCMP frontline officers located and arrested a 30-year-old suspect.

In the early stages of the investigation, police learned the suspect assaulted at least two other victims on April 20. Investigators would still like to speak to these two individuals and anyone else who may have witnessed the assaults.

“We would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance. We asked for help and they stepped up,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj. “We continue to urge the additional two victims who have not yet come forward to police to contact our investigators.”

Police are requesting anyone who may have witnessed these assaults and anyone assaulted by this suspect to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 and quote file number 23-12960.
