“LET’S make Vancouver truly the greatest city in the world, for all of us. Let’s ensure people who work and study here can afford to live here. Let’s build an even more vibrant arts scene and protect our cultural and music spaces. Let’s build world-class transit systems, and let’s take good care of the most vulnerable people in our communities. By including everyone, we will build a truly great city, together.”

Taleeb Noormohamed, a tech entrepreneur, wrote that on his Facebook before announcing on Wednesday night in Gastown that he wanted to be Vision Vancouver’s candidate for mayor.

Noormohamed was involved in organizing the 2010 Winter Olympics. He has worked for several short-term rental companies and also worked on a federal government review of the 1985 Air India bombing file. In 2011, he was a federal Liberal candidate from North Vancouver, but lost.

Noormohamed is an Ismaili whose parents came to Canada from East Africa.

Georgia Straight’s Editor Charlie Smith wrote: “Noormohamed could become Vancouver’s first Muslim mayor.”
